Trump Slams ‘Very Unfair’ Drug Sentences


More often than not they are unfair.

The drug war has destroyed far more lives than drugs. (And drugs have destroyed plenty.) The “war” has enriched government agencies and drug cartels alike. It has ravaged our liberties. It may be time to seriously rethink our direction in this country on the drug front.

It is interesting that Trump might move this ball forward. That the president and Mr. Sessions seem to be at odds generally is an interesting factor in the sentencing reform debate.

These comments, which may seem surprising from a man who has consciously cultivated a tough-on-crime image, reflect the influence of people Trump respects, people like his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a supporter of the conservative reform organization Right on Crime. And yes, people like Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.
