Ron Paul Rewind: Defense Spending vs. Empire Spending

Last year, debate “moderators” from Fox News had a hard time understanding the difference between legitimate spending on defending the U.S. versus the wasteful spending on the military empire. Dr. Paul explained it with passion and in true smackdown form, leaving the warmongers on stage, and in the audience, speechless.

Enjoy!

Full Text:

When Will We Attack Syria? Plans, rumors, and war propaganda for attacking Syria and deposing Assad have been around for many months. This past week however, it was reported that the Pentagon indeed has finalized plans to do just that. In my opinion, all the evidence to justify this attack is bogus. It is no more credible than the pretext given for the 2003 invasion of Iraq or the 2011 attack on Libya. The total waste of those wars should cause us to pause before this all-out effort at occupation and regime change is initiated against Syria. There are no national security concerns that require such a foolish escalation of violence in the Middle East. There should be no doubt that our security interests are best served by completely staying out of the internal strife now raging in Syria. We are already too much involved in supporting the forces within Syria anxious to overthrow the current government. Without outside interference, the strife—now characterized as a civil war—would likely be non-existent. Whether or not we attack yet another country, occupying it and setting up a new regime that we hope we can control poses a serious Constitutional question: From where does a president get such authority? Since World War II the proper authority to go to war has been ignored. It has been replaced by international entities like the United Nations and NATO, or the President himself, while ignoring the Congress. And sadly, the people don’t object. Our recent presidents explicitly maintain that the authority to go to war is not the U.S. Congress. This has been the case since 1950 when we were taken into war in Korea under UN Resolution and without Congressional approval. And once again, we are about to engage in military action against Syria and at the same time irresponsibly reactivating the Cold War with Russia. We’re now engaged in a game of “chicken” with Russia which presents a much greater threat to our security than does Syria. How would we tolerate Russia in Mexico demanding a humanitarian solution to the violence on the U.S.-Mexican border? We would consider that a legitimate concern for us. But, for us to be engaged in Syria, where the Russian have a legal naval base, is equivalent to the Russians being in our backyard in Mexico. We are hypocritical when we condemn Russian for protecting their neighborhood interests for exactly what we have been doing ourselves, thousands of miles away from our shores. There’s no benefit for us to be picking sides, secretly providing assistance and encouraging civil strife in an effort to effect regime change in Syria. Falsely charging the Russians with supplying military helicopters to Assad is an unnecessary provocation. Falsely blaming the Assad government for a so-called massacre perpetrated by a violent warring rebel faction is nothing more than war propaganda. Most knowledgeable people now recognize that the planned war against Syria is merely the next step to take on the Iranian government, something the neo-cons openly admit. Controlling Iranian oil, just as we have done in Saudi Arabia and are attempting to do in Iraq, is the real goal of the neo-conservatives who have been in charge of our foreign policy for the past couple of decades. War is inevitable without a significant change in our foreign policy, and soon. Disagreements between our two political parties are minor. Both agree the sequestration of any war funds must be canceled. Neither side wants to abandon our aggressive and growing presence in the Middle East and South Asia. This crisis building can easily get out of control and become a much bigger war than just another routine occupation and regime change that the American people have grown to accept or ignore. It’s time the United States tried a policy of diplomacy, seeking peace, trade, and friendship. We must abandon our military effort to promote and secure an American empire. Besides, we’re broke, we can’t afford it, and worst of all, we’re fulfilling the strategy laid out by Osama bin Laden whose goal had always been to bog us down in the Middle East and bring on our bankruptcy here at home. It’s time to bring our troops home and establish a non-interventionist foreign policy, which is the only road to peace and prosperity.
This week I am introducing legislation to prohibit the Administration, absent a declaration of war by Congress, from supporting — directly or indirectly — any military or paramilitary operations in Syria. I hope my colleagues will join me in this effort.

Ron Paul: Keynesianism and War of Ideas Have Just Begun

Ron Paul Keynesianism and War of Ideas Have Just Begun

It will be just the beginning of the end” says Ron Paul, referring to the fate of Keynesianism, big government, and the old Republican party.

On Friday, Dr. Paul released a video to his supporters, outlining his thoughts on his campaign, the upcoming GOP convention in Tampa, and the larger libertarian movement he has participated in and helped inspire.

First, he addressed the criticisms of his campaign by saying, “There are individuals who think the campaign was less than perfect.” Continuing, “Others think the campaign had achieved success far beyond anyone’s expectations.”

Noting the number of supporters who will be attending the convention (even within the ranks of supposedly “bound” Romney delegates), as well as the Ron Paul rally set to occur outside the convention place on August 26, Dr. Paul spoke optimistically about what his campaign has achieved, both in terms of this election cycle, and also within Republican party leadership as a whole.

He went on to compare the fight against establishment Republicans with the closing days of the Vietnam War: That although the United States had won all major battles, and possessed an incomparably advanced and well-funded arsenal, it was all but irrelevant in terms of the larger war. In this way, although Mitt Romney’s establishment Republicans won more states in the primary season, the war of ideas has spelled doom for the old guard, as a young and participatory class of libertarians has already begun its takeover of the GOP. Already, libertarians have ousted establishment Republicans in states such as Nevada, Alaska, and Iowa; and in some cases, forcing neoconservatives to form “shadow parties.”

Alaska Patriots Can Award ALL 24 Republican Delegates To Dr. Paul

FAIRBANKS — Outgoing Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich told Fairbanks Republicans at a weekly luncheon Friday to “go fishing” instead of returning to the party’s reconvened state convention in June.

The move could thwart an expected bid by a coalition of Tea Partiers and Ron Paul supporters to dramatically rewrite party rules in order to award the state’s 24 Republican delegates to Paul, a change Ruedrich said would undermine the Republican Presidential Preference Poll held earlier this year.

Ron Paul supporters and Tea Party members scored a sweeping victory against what they called “establishment Republicans” at the state convention in April. In a rowdy three-day meeting, which included the booing of U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, dissatisfied state delegates elected new party leaders, including political newcomer Russ Millette to replace Ruedrich, who didn’t seek re-election.

Ron Paul on The Laura Ingraham Show – 5/3/12

YouTube Preview Image

Ron Paul was on The Laura Ingraham Show today, and he spoke with her about Afghanistan, federal spending, the Chen diplomatic issues President Obama is having, and why he thinks Mitt Romney is only “marginally” better than President Obama.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who predicted and warned against the economic crisis, who understood and explained the reasons for it, and who offers a viable solution.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who really means it when he says he wants to bring our troops home and scale down our unsustainable and unreasonable empire.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who is serious about slashing spending and eliminating taxes.

Even though others are now trying to sound like him, there is only one Ron Paul. And there is only one candidate who can beat Obama: Ron Paul.
Congressman Ron Paul is the leading advocate for freedom in our nation’s capital. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dr. Paul tirelessly works for limited, constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies. He is known among his congressional colleagues and his constituents for his consistent voting record. Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution. In the words of former Treasury Secretary William Simon, Dr. Paul is the “one exception to the Gang of 535″ on Capitol Hill.

Ron Paul was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College and the Duke University School of Medicine, before proudly serving as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. He and his wife Carol moved to Texas in 1968, where he began his medical practice in Brazoria County. As a specialist in obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. Paul has delivered more than 4,000 babies. He and Carol, who reside in Lake Jackson, Texas, are the proud parents of five children and have 17 grandchildren.

While serving in Congress during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dr. Paul’s limited-government ideals were not popular in Washington. In 1976, he was one of only four Republican congressmen to endorse Ronald Reagan for president.

During that time, Congressman Paul served on the House Banking committee, where he was a strong advocate for sound monetary policy and an outspoken critic of the Federal Reserve’s inflationary measures. He was an unwavering advocate of pro-life and pro-family values. Dr. Paul consistently voted to lower or abolish federal taxes, spending and regulation, and used his House seat to actively promote the return of government to its proper constitutional levels. In 1984, he voluntarily relinquished his House seat and returned to his medical practice.

Dr. Paul returned to Congress in 1997 to represent the 14th congressional district of Texas. He presently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. He continues to advocate a dramatic reduction in the size of the federal government and a return to constitutional principles.

Congressman Paul’s consistent voting record prompted one of his congressional colleagues to say, “Ron Paul personifies the Founding Fathers’ ideal of the citizen-statesman. He makes it clear that his principles will never be compromised, and they never are.” Another colleague observed, “There are few people in public life who, through thick and thin, rain or shine, stick to their principles. Ron Paul is one of those few.”

Why Does Ron Paul Continue to Pack Houses?

Source: http://www.ronpaul2012.com

By Jack Hunter

FoxDC.com reports:

Paul, who is in last place among the four Republicans seeking the GOP nomination to run against President Barack Obama (actually Paul is not in last place according to the latest CNN poll, but we’ll let this slide for the moment), spoke Wednesday night to a capacity crowd at the University of Maryland, College Park’s Ritchie Coliseum.

He touched on campaign themes underscoring the need to shrink federal government.

The fire marshal estimated about 1,780 people attended. Scores of students lined up outside were turned away because the venue was full.

Supporters chanted “President Paul” before the congressman spoke.

Combined inside and outside, Ron Paul spoke to about 2,000 people in Maryland. But why?

Why do so many keep coming to hear Dr. Paul speak at every stop? Why are they so enthusiastic about him? Why do they keep fighting to elect him president?

This is what the political and media establishment will never understand. The Ron Paul campaign is a mission to change this country by shrinking government, cutting spending and restoring liberty–not merely saying these things during a Republican primary, but actually doing them.

Paul supporters know that the status quo is unsustainable and genuinely fear for the future of their country. They realize that even though President Obama has exacerbated our problems, our problems did not begin with Obama. Paul supporters also realize the other Republican candidates not only will do nothing to substantively change course in Washington DC–most of them are just as responsible as the Democrats for the current, sad state of affairs. Obama vs. Obama-lite is no choice. Especially when it’s even arguable if the Republican is Obama-lite.

The political class can’t comprehend anything beyond largely meaningless horse races, but Paul supporters comprehend truths that will continue to have serious ramifications for America in 2012 and beyond.

Americans flock to Ron Paul not because he gives them a certain kind of hope–but because his message is our only hope.
