Sequel to SOPA could see NSA spy on journalists, media pirates

If you download and distribute copyrighted material on the Internet, or share any information that governments or corporations find inconvenient, you could soon be labeled a threat to national security in the United States.

That’s the aim of a bill in Congress called the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), which some have labeled in recent weeks as a type of sequel to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a highly controversial series of proposals that were utterly destroyed by an online mass work-stoppage protest earlier this year.

CISPA, however, is nothing like SOPA, despite its recent association in the media. While SOPA included provisions that would have essentially broken the Internet by allowing the U.S. to delete domains from a central registry system, CISPA does nothing of the sort, and aims more at “cyber threat intelligence” gathering than censorship and piracy prevention.

Ron Paul smashed attendance records last night at UC Berkeley finally putting to rest the question of how big will his rallies in California be. The campaign estimates that over 8,500 people gathered to listen to Paul speak on the steps of Doe Library. This is of course the latest and largest gathering that the congressman has had in this election cycle.
UC Berkeley has a reputation of left-wing politics and activism however as these videos show freedom is probably the most popular view on campus these days.

‘Pink slime’ is also used in cheese

‘Pink slime’ is also used in cheese, reveals meat industry under fire for using caustic cleaning chemical

The controversy over ammonia-treated beef – or what critics dub ‘pink slime’ – broadened this week as it was revealed that the caustic cleaning chemical is also used in cheese.

Related compounds are also used in baked goods and chocolate.

Ammonia, known for its noxious odor, became a hot topic with the uproar over what the meat industry calls ‘finely textured beef’ and what a former U.S. government scientist first called ‘pink slime’.

Backlash: Meat industry experts have struck back after the ‘pink slime’ controversy by pointing out that the chemical is also used in cheese.

The meat industry has been trying to raise awareness of other foods that contain ammonia, in response to what it has characterized as an unfair attack on a safe and healthy product.

For example, ammonia compounds are used as leavening agents in baked goods and as an acidity controller in cheese and sometimes chocolate.

‘Ammonia’s not an unusual product to find added to food,’ Gary Acuff, director of Texas A&M University’s Center for Food Safety, told a recent press conference hosted by Beef Products Inc. ‘We use ammonia in all kinds of foods in the food industry.’

After critics highlighted the product on social media websites and showed unappetizing photos on television, calling it ‘pink slime,’ the nation’s leading fast-food chains and supermarkets spurned the product, even though U.S. public health officials deem it safe to eat.

Hundreds of U.S. school districts also demanded it be removed from school lunch programs.

One producer, Beef Products Inc, has since idled three factories. Another, AFA Foods, filed for bankruptcy protection.

Ammonia – often associated with cleaning products – was cleared by U.S. health officials nearly 40 years ago and is used in making many foods, including cheese. Related compounds have a role in baked goods and chocolate products.

Using small amounts of ammonia to make food is not unusual to those expert in high-tech food production. Now that little known world is coming under increasing pressure from concerned consumers who want to know more about what they are eating.

‘I think we’re seeing a sea change today in consumers’ concerns about the presence of ingredients in foods, and this is just one example,’ said Michael Doyle, director of the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety

The outrage, which many experts say has been fueled by the term ‘pink slime,’ seems more about the unsavoriness of the product rather than its safety.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry showed his support for Beef Products Inc by tucking into a 'pink slime' burger during a tour of one of their plants.

‘This is not a health issue,’ said Bill Marler, a prominent food safety lawyer. ‘This is an ‘I’m grossed out by this’ issue.’

Still, critics of so-called ‘Big Food’ point out that while ‘pink slime’ and the ammonia in it may not be harmful, consumer shock over their presence points to a wider issue.

‘The food supply is full of all sorts of chemical additives that people don’t know about,’ said Michele Simon, a public health lawyer and president of industry watchdog consulting firm Eat Drink Politics.

Wiggins said that in turning milk to cheese, a tiny amount of ammonium hydroxide is added to a starter dairy culture to reduce the culture’s acidity and encourage cheese cultures to grow.

‘It is somewhat similar to activating yeast for dough by adding warm water, sugar and salt to create the proper environment for yeast growth,’ Wiggins said.

In the case of ammonium phosphate, used as a leavening agent in baking, she said the heat during baking causes the gas to evaporate.

We, the consumers, need to know what we are buying in these regards.  Honesty in food labeling is something that needs to be driven home to our legislative bodies, whether it is “pink slime”, which years ago was filler for dog food, or GMO products.  Label the beef as 20% “pink slime” or other products as GMO or not, let the people and the free market dicide who we will buy from and which companies will go belly up after not being able to sell their products.

Bill Allows IRS to Deny Americans Right to Travel

Senator Barbara Boxer’s MAP-21 (Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act) is headed to the House after clearing the Senate last month. Boxer’s bill allows the federal government to revoke the passports of citizens the IRS claims owe taxes.

“There is no requirement that the tax payer be guilty of or even charged with tax evasion, fraud, or any criminal offense — only that the citizen is alleged to owe the IRS back taxes of $50,000 or more,” reports The Daily Economist.

In other words, the Fourth Amendment will become irrelevant in many taxes cases if this legislation makes it through the House. MAP-21 does, however, face opposition by some Republicans.

In order to blunt criticism, Boxer’s bill is being portrayed in standard class warfare fashion – according to CBS and others, the law will be used to go after wealthy tax scofflaws who owe the IRS $50,000 or more, so the average citizen need not worry.

In fact, the IRS routinely leans on the little guy and small business owners. For instance, in 2010 the owner of a car wash in Sacramento, California, was harassed by the IRS after the government said he owed four cents in back taxes (which became $200 after three years of penalties and fees).

The IRS is also used by the establishment as a political weapon, as various Tea Party organizations around the country recently learned.

“In January and February of this year, the Internal Revenue Service began sending out letters to various local Tea Parties across the country,” writes Colleen Owens. The federal wealth confiscation agency asked the political groups to identify their volunteers and donors. “What possible reason would the IRS have for Tea Parties to ‘name your donors’ when said donations are non-deductible?” Owens notes (most Tea Party organizations are nonprofit 501(c)(4) and donations are not deductible).

Chief Justice John Marshall once observed that “the power to tax involves the power to destroy” and that is precisely what the government often attempts to do, as former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio discovered in 2010.

The IRS is no longer strictly about taxes. “Top IRS officials have been working with Democrats on Capitol Hill to determine how the agency will enforce President Obama’s new health care law. Republican lawmakers estimate the legislation will require the hiring of many thousands of new (and armed) tax enforcement agents,” Fox News reported last month. “Under the new law, the IRS is required to fine taxpayers thousands of dollars if they do not purchase health insurance. In order for the government to enforce compliance, tax authorities will need information, for the first time, about people’s health care. Collecting that data will require more IRS personnel.”

In short, the IRS will act as an enforcer – armed to the teeth – for Obamacare, that is if it is not ruled to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in June.

Ron Paul with 8,500-plus Voters at UC – Berkeley Shatters Town Hall Meeting Attendance Record

Unprecedented crowd of supporters and undecided voters greets Dr. Paul at final of three California events held during this visit

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul attracted a peculiar 8,500-plus voters to the third of three town hall meetings he held in California this week, this time at UC-Berkeley.  In drawing such a huge crowd to Berkeley, the 12-term Congressman from Texas shattered his unrivaled town hall meeting attendance record.

At similar events held yesterday and Tuesday, respectively, Dr. Paul drew remarkable crowds of 6,200-plus voters to Cal State – Chico, and 6,000-plus at UCLA.

Ron Paul’s college campus town hall meeting took place at 7:00 p.m. PST at UC-Berkeley’s Memorial Glade, where he addressed the crowd from atop the steps of Doe Library, Berkeley, CA 94720.

Dr. Paul spoke about his platform of constitutionally-limited government, the enduring bonds between economic and civil liberties, and elements of his ‘Plan to Restore America,’ a fiscal blueprint the cuts Washington spending, shrinks the national debt, and reverses the federal government’s harmful growth and intrusiveness.

Ron Paul’s town hall meetings in California were organized by ‘Youth for Ron Paul’ (YFP).  YFP, an initiative of the Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign, launched in September 2011, and since its inception, students nationwide have organized 591 chapters and recruited more than 53,600 people.  To learn more about ‘Youth for Ron Paul,’ including how to sign-up and establish a local chapter, visit the YFP website by clicking here.

Ron Paul Draws Remarkable 6,000-plus Voters to His UCLA Town Hall Meeting

Capacity crowd at Los Angeles Tennis Center greets Dr. Paul while hundreds more turned away

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul continued his pattern of attracting thousands of attendees to his town hall meetings, this time drawing 6,000-plus voters to his UCLA campus event.

Tonight’s UCLA town hall meeting took place at 8:30 p.m. PST at the Los Angeles Tennis Center (LATC)’s Straus Stadium, located at 420 Charles E. Young Drive West, Los Angeles, CA 90095.  Dr. Paul spoke to the UCLA and general community about the need for constitutionally-limited government, the bonds that tie economic and civil liberties, and elements of his ‘Plan to Restore America,’ an economic blueprint that cuts Washington spending, reduces debt, and curtails the rapid growth of the federal government.

Event organizers noted that in addition to the capacity crowd of more than 5,800 seated guests, more than 300 attendees were denied entrance due to the local fire marshal’s concern for overcrowding.  Just last night, the 12-term Congressman from Texas broke his earlier record attracting more than 6,200 voters to a similar town hall meeting held at Cal State – Chico.

Coast Guard sinks Japan tsunami ‘ghost ship’

Coast Guard sinks Japan tsunami ‘ghost ship’

The US Coast Guard sunk a Japanese “ghost ship” with bursts of heavy gunfire when it drifted into Alaskan waters more than a year after being set adrift by a devastating tsunami.

The deserted trawler, seen as a shipping hazard, was first spotted off the coast of Canada on March 24, having drifted thousands of miles (kilometers) across the Pacific Ocean on the current following the March 2011 tsunami.

The Ryou-Un Maru fishing vessel, which appeared about 180 miles off the coast in 6,000-foot (2,000-meter) deep water, was a significant navigation hazard, officials said.

“It’s between 150 and 200 feet long, it’s unmanned and unlit and adrift. In the dark, it presents a significant danger to other vessels transiting that area,” Sara Francis, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Coast Guard, told AFP.

The Japanese owners of the ship had said they did not want it back. Early Thursday, a Canadian crew had tried to save it, but after a closer inspection they abandoned the idea and the operation to sink the ship began.

The Coast Guard fired an initial salvo of 25 mm explosive rounds, causing the ship to catch fire and list slightly, according to Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow, in the Alaskan capital of Juneau.

A second salvo was fired later in the afternoon, he said, and the Coast Guard confirmed the vessel sank at 6:15 pm Thursday (0215 GMT Friday).

It released pictures of the rusty-hulled vessel on fire, with a column of black smoke rising into the air.

The Coast Guard said that there was no risk that pollution from the ship would threaten the pristine Alaskan and Canadian coasts.

“If there is any fuel on board it’s expected to be diesel fuel, which will disappear very quickly and pose limited risk to the environment,” Francis said.

The boat was the largest piece of debris so far to appear off the US coast after the March 11, 2011 tsunami.

Some 20 million tons of debris have washed up since the disaster, and researchers in Hawaii have developed computer models to forecast its movement and predict where and when it could come ashore.
