U.S. Seals Court Records Of Border Patrol’s Murder

The Obama Administration has abruptly sealed court records containing alarming details of how Mexican drug smugglers murdered a U.S. Border patrol agent with a gun connected to a failed federal experiment that allowed firearms to be smuggled into Mexico.

This means information will now be kept from the public as well as the media. Could this be a cover-up on the part of the “most transparent” administration in history? After all, the rifle used to kill the federal agent (Brian Terry) last December in Arizona’s Peck Canyon was part of the now infamous Operation Fast and Furious. Conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the disastrous scheme allowed guns to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels.

Instead, federal law enforcement officers lost track of more than 1,000 guns which have been used in numerous crimes. In Terry’s case, five illegal immigrants armed with at least two semi-automatic assault rifles were hunting for U.S. Border Patrol agents near a desert watering hole just north of the Arizona-Mexico border when a firefight erupted and Terry got hit.

We know this only because Washington D.C.’s conservative newspaper , the Washington Times, got a Eric olde, gunhold of the court documents before the government suddenly made them off limits. The now-sealed federal grand jury indictment tells the frightening story of how Terry was gunned down by Mexican drug smugglers patrolling the rugged desert with the intent to “intentionally and forcibly assault” Border Patrol agents.

You can see why the administration wants to keep this information from the public and the media, considering the smugglers were essentially armed by the U.S. government. Truth is, no one will know the reason for the confiscation of public court records in this case because the judge’s decision to seal it was also sealed, according to the news story. That means the public or media won’t have access to any new or old evidence, filings, rulings or arguments.

A number of high-ranking Border Patrol officials are questioning how the case is being handled. For instance, they wonder why the defendant (Manuel Osorio-Arellanes) hasn’t been tried even though it’s been almost a year since Terry’s murder. They also have concerns about the lack of transparency in the investigation, not to mention the recent sealing of the court case.

Osorio-Arellanes is charged with second-degree murder. The four other drug smugglers fled the scene and their names were blacked out in the indictment. In 2006 Osorio-Arellanes had been convicted in Phoenix of felony aggravated assault and in 2010 he was twice detained for being in the U.S. illegally.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this month to address the flawed gun-tracking program, Attorney General Eric Holder said it’s not fair to assume that mistakes in Operation Fast and Furious led to Terry’s death. Holder also expressed regret to the federal agent’s family, saying that he can only imagine their pain.

Ron Paul: “Republican Candidates Just Represent The Status Quo”

Source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com

Republican candidate for president Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) appeared on CNBC to discuss the Federal Reserve and a worldwide quantitative easing, the 2012 field and an independent run for office.

“That doesn’t mean a whole lot. That’s what they’re in the business of doing, and that is to inflate the currency to tide people over and to provide liquidity. And providing liquidity in a situation like this just means they’re buying up bad debt that nobody else wants and they do this by creating credit. But I think it’s sort of a reflection of a panicky type of reaction to get everybody doing this. Including China. They must really be worried to get together like this,” Ron Paul said about the Fed’s decision, 9 to 1, to not change the monetary policy, which means more printing.

Opining on the Republican field, Ron Paul says they all “just represent the status quo.”

“Yeah, I think it’s because it’s more of the status quo. I think all the other Republican candidates just represent the status quo,” Paul told CNBC. “More of the same. No change in the foreign policy. No change in the federal reserve. No cut in spending. I’m the one that’s offering a trillion dollars in cuts because I believe the government is so big and so out of control that you have to have real cuts. But all this other talk about cuts, whether it’s Romney or anybody else, the cuts in proposed increases, that’s why the American people don’t believe that they have a solution.”

“We just keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing for the 40 years. Spending excessively, running up debt, printing up money, and manipulating interest rates. And we’re up against the wall now, it doesn’t work anymore. Lowering interest rates is essentially impossible. That’s what they’re desperately trying to do today. But, you know, when our interest rates to the banks are down to zero, What are they going to do? Used to be that Congress would just spend more money and that would help. How can they spend more money when there’s no more money in the Treasury. So, no, Romney and the rest aren’t offering anything new,” he said.

Ron Paul also warns the Federal Reserve in the interview. He says the Fed shouldn’t bailout Europe on the backs of the American taxpayers.

Paul once again wouldn’t rule out a third party run if he does not get the Republican nomination. However, Paul said it was very unlikely, describing the chances as 1 in 20 million.

Florida Dems drop flyer questioning Romney’s Iranian investments

Florida Democrats have begun distributing these flyers, with a focus in Jewish-heavy Broward and Palm Beach counties, that seek to undercut Romney’s tough stance on Iran.

At issue are investments the Romney family charity bought and sold investments in companies that dealt with Iranian businesses. “The truth about Mitt Romney’s actions with Iran are a far cry from his rhetoric,” the flyer states.

More on the investments in this AP story. It’s worth noting that Romney’s campaign at the time the story ran that the investments were managed on a blind basis. “They do not control the investment of these assets,” spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said.

Democrats would not say how many flyers were being distributed, only that volunteers began handing them out yesterday, when Romney was in the state.

New Hampshire Takes Another Look At Ron Paul

Cheryl Senter/AP Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is surrounded by supporters after speaking at a town hall meeting in Keene, N.H., on Monday.

In this presidential cycle, as in the last, there is no question which Republican candidate has the most ardent supporters: Ron Paul, the 76-year-old Texas congressman whose brand of libertarianism often puts him at odds with all of his rivals. But with less than seven weeks to go for the nation’s first primary, there are signs that Paul could surprise people.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is sitting pretty in New Hampshire, where he has been the front-runner all year, so whoever comes in second in the Granite State isn’t doing too shabbily.

“I could very well see Ron Paul coming in second place,” said longtime pollster Andy Smith, who runs the University of New Hampshire Survey Center.

Smith’s numbers last week show Paul in third with 12 percent, up from just a month ago. Other alternatives to Romney have risen to double digits only to fall back again, but Smith says Paul has some key advantages.

“He’s got more money than other candidates, and he seems to have a more committed young following,” he said. “Those young voters [are] always important on the campaign trail because they essentially will work for free and they’re very enthusiastic about Paul.”

Last week at Keene State College, Paul was clearly finding his campaign’s sweet spot. More than 300 people packed at town hall meeting, many of them students. Paul launched his remarks with his signature call to return the dollar to the gold standard. He then talked of his plan to bring home American troops from across the globe.

“I don’t believe we have the right or the authority to tell other people what to do,” he said. “I believe we should be dealing with our own problems at home and improving our own conditions here.”

Paul’s base of young voters and hard-core libertarians leads some handicappers to pigeonhole him and dismiss his chances — and with some historic justification. In the 2008 New Hampshire primary, he drew less than 8 percent of the vote. But things could be significantly different this time as Paul reaches out into new corners of the electorate.

His next stop after Keene was a house party in the affluent town of Windham on the border with Massachusetts. This was no humble living-room affair. The host hired bartenders to staff not one but two built-in bars. The appetizer table offered rabbit pate.

Four years ago, Steve Airocci, who teaches social studies, voted for Obama and had no interest in Paul. Now, he’s interested. He says he senses the established order has driven the country down to rock bottom.

“There’s nowhere else to go,” he said. “We have to do something drastic. We have to make some significant changes in government and primarily on the financial side.”

Airocci is a registered independent, a fertile group for Paul in the past. This year, though, some registered Republicans are also giving Paul a closer look. Many voters who like Paul say they believe he is the only candidate who truly means what he says.

Former state Republican Party Chairman Fergus Cullen says another reason voters might have good feelings about Paul is the way he has side-stepped the normal campaign rough and tumble.

“He’s unlikely to get attacked by the other opponents because no one sees it in their interest to go after him,” he said. “So they’re going to continue to just hear the positive and not the negative.”

Cullen says events have made Paul’s ideas about foreign entanglements and rethinking government more plausible. But his gut tells him most Republican primary voters are still not ready to go as far as Paul would like.

That’s probably true for the race for first place. But in the race for second, Paul might be the one to watch in the home stretch.

Obama Administration Seals Court Records of Agent Brian Terry’s Murder

On December 14, 2010 in Peck Canyon, northwest of Nogales, Arizona, Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot dead by a group of illegal border entrants who refused commands to drop their weapons after they were confronted by US agents. The illegals murdered Terry with a gun connected to a failed federal experiment that allowed firearms to be smuggled into Mexico. The family of slain border agent Brian Terry blamed Eric Holder for their son’s death in a recent interview.

Now the Obama Administration has sealed the court records on Agent Terry’s murder.
